Why I am completely opposed to the Canadian Seal Hunt?
I oppose Canada’s seal hunt as a matter of moralty.
Sealing is NOT an economic necessity. Maybe it once was, long ago. But now it is a barbaric tradition that the sealers and the Canadian government stubbornly refuse to give up, even in the face of criticism from much of the rest of the world. With lies and omissions the Canadian government tries to cover up the atrocities and justify supporting the seal hunts.
My fight is not with the Inuit people, there is a difference in an indigenous culture's right to hunt for food and economic survival, and the non-indigenous Newfoundlander's massive slaughter of defenseless animals for profit and vanity!
The Canadian government likes to tell the world that this slaughter is "98% humane". The facts and documented evidence shows that to be an outright lie.
What is 98% humane about clubbing to death 12 day old baby harp seals, with a large ice-pick-like hakapik (many requiring second strikes)? What is 98% humane about skinning alive these defenseless creatures? What is 98% humane about killing baby Harp seals so someone can show off their expensive seal pelts?
People ask me sometimes about Why am I oppose to the hunt of the harp seal? Why not the killings of animals in farms? Why not the hunt of whales? Why not starting at the top of the list of "endangered species'? Is it because the harp seal is "cute and fluffy? How about the rest of the animals? How about the ones not "so cute" ? How about humans?...
Well , one can't do it all... Animal rights groups like IFAW and individuals like myself DO care about the cattle , horses , whales and ALL of the other animals. That is why this organizations have different people addressing different issues. The people addressing the seal hunt are doing so because it is yet another issue in the inhumane world that needs attention.
Never did any of the animal rights people or myself say that we don't care about humans.In fact I'm sure that people who are humane enough to know that animals deserve rights are more compassionate about people than others. My job is to stand up for animals and that's what I'm doing. Unlike humans, animals can't stand up for themselves.
I will continue to do what I can to make the world aware of this slaughter and to do what I can to stop it.
